Anatomy of a mispriced project

Let me tell you about that time I worked 650 hours to earn $7500.

This was last year, so it’s not like it was a newbie mistake.

What happened?

  1. I took on a project without understanding the full scope
  2. I vastly underestimated how long various elements of the project would take
  3. I didn’t include my usual “unexpected problems” cushion to my quote – I wanted the project!
  4. I wasn’t vigilant enough about scope creep
  5. I let myself be pressured into saying yes by an upcoming deadline

In fact, I think #5 was probably the biggest factor in this snarl. If I hadn’t felt rushed to make a decision, I could have asked more questions, calculated the time involved in producing the various elements of the project, and so on.

So, let this be a lesson to you (it certainly was to me!)
