Editing Horror (October 22 – Nov 3, 2024)

$75.00

Description

$75 (Members: $30*) | How to edit horror | 2 weeks | Hybrid with Instructor feedback | Intermediate

Veteran horror editor James Gallagher leads this class. It begins with a one-hour webinar on October 22, 2024 (from 11 a.m. to noon Pacific time). The webinar will be recorded – you can view it later if you’re not able to join the live session.

Then the class will continue in the online forum. We’ll discuss the material James has presented. You’ll have the chance to edit a chapter from a horror manuscript. James will give feedback on your edit and you’ll be able to ask follow-up questions.

The class will cover:

  • What is horror?
  • Brief history of genre
  • Subgenres
  • Horror beats and tropes
  • Character: protagonist v. the monster
  • Setting
  • Controlling theme: From life to death to damnation
  • The unknown
  • Reader immersion
  • Editorial concerns for problematic tropes

Intermediate classes are intended for those with some developmental editing experience or who have taken the Beginning + Intermediate DE for Fiction classes or the self-paced DE 1 through 6 classes.

The class is entirely online and asynchronous (you don’t have to be in any particular place at any particular time to participate) but the assignment is due by a specific deadline.
